What I Do for Fun in Destin, Florida

Fun in Destin, Florida

If there’s one thing that Destin, Florida, does well, it’s water. My family and I love spending time outdoors, but it can get pretty darn hot here, so we have our blazing-sunshine-friendly activities down to a science.

The way I see it, we have two options: complain about the heat or revel in our year-round ability to soak up some rays. And if it’s between sweating indoors like a grouch and sweating in a beach chair on the shore, I’m going to choose the beach chair (or, better yet, a boat) every time.

Luckily, easy access to water takes the edge off during Florida’s fiery months. Whether you’re considering a move to Destin or just visiting, I encourage you and your family to get out and explore. As a long-time realtor, I can tell you that there’s a lot to see.

One of my favorite activities is, of course, spending hours at the beach. When you’ve had enough of your chair (and your book—I always bring a book), you can swim in the clear gulf water or search for pretty shells. The sugar-white sand and emerald sea are unbeatable.

If you have animal lovers in your family, get excited. Destin is the ideal location to begin a dolphin cruise. Sail out to the Gulf of Mexico and watch how close these beautiful creatures will come to your boat. My first dolphin cruise was magical; I think about it all the time.

For more boating fun, I recommend renting a pontoon and taking it to Crab Island, which is basically a 24/7 party. (Be sure to pack your sunscreen and plenty of hydrating liquids!) The water ranges from one to four feet deep, making this the perfect spot to drop your anchor and swim. Crab Island also has obstacle courses, slides, and floating bars, so it was unsurprising when it was featured on both HGTV and GMA. I don’t say this about many things, but it’s worth the hype.

Another favorite of mine is Big Kahuna’s Water Park. Ideal for entertaining kids on a hot day, there are over 40 different attractions, all water-based. They have plenty of rides for the thrill-seekers in your family, or you can spend the day floating in the lazy river (where you’ll find me!).

Of course, water slides can’t hide you from the sun forever. On those days when it’s just too hot to go outside, I like to make time for some good old-fashioned (air-conditioned) shopping. Destin Commons offers a variety of stores, everything from high-end boutiques to Bass Pro. And just east of the Commons are the Silver Sands Premium Outlets, where you can spend a day finding all sorts of treasures. HarborWalk Village, The Village of Baytowne Wharf, and Seaside are other excellent shopping destinations. (If you’re looking for something special, definitely hit Seaside. My favorite store is Fusion Art Glass. Their planet paperweights are stunning!)

If you live in Florida, then you know how good it feels to jump in the water. There’s nothing quite like it. So, while my definition of fun certainly leaves room for air conditioning, I rarely pass up an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.

In my experience, the most fun you can have in Destin requires the least amount of effort. All you need is some sunscreen, a water bottle, and a bit of time to experience the beauty of this city. I hope you love it as much as I do!
